Koh Samui has no shortage of beaches, but the finest ones for peace and space lie in the south, away from the well-trodden bays.
Most first-time visitors to Koh Samui never make it past Chaweng and Lamai. That is good news for anyone staying in the south, because it leaves the quieter, wilder beaches almost to yourself.
Laem Set Beach
Rocky, characterful, and beautifully calm, Laem Set is less a swimming beach than a place to wander and watch the sea. Smooth granite boulders meet clear shallow water, and the sunrise here is among the best on the island.
Lamai Beach
The island's second-largest beach, Lamai is softer and far less hectic than Chaweng. A long sweep of golden sand with gentle water makes it ideal for families, and the town behind it has everything from local markets to relaxed beach bars. It is around ten minutes from the southern hills.
